Founded in 1920, Andis is currently a 95+-year-old Family-Business- turned- Multinational Company providing world-class grooming products all over the world. It all started when Mathew Andis, the founder, decided to leave his job as a toolmaker at Mitchell Motor Car Company in Racine, Wisconsin, USA. He decided to use his skills to start his own business. He joined in partnership with John Oster and Henry Meltzer and started his Journey with Andis O M Manufacturing and were producing clipper blades which only lasted till 1921. They separated their partnership and concentrated in their own individual ventures.
Mathew Andis started his operations with Andis Clippers Company in 1922. Generations later, Andis is now one of the major American manufacturers for grooming products that vow to make your home hairdressing reach perfection. It is still run by President Mathew Andis K. and Co. President Laura Andis Bishop who are family heirs of Mathew Andis.
Contemporary Brands with Andis
Andis has been in business for 90 plus years and has stood proudly as a multinational company which is older than many popular brands. Oster is the closest contemporary brand in terms of timeline and then comes Revlon.
However, in terms of the quality of their products, materials generally used and other factors, contemporary brands are Conair, Berta, Vav, Jinri, Xtava etc.
Features of Andis Hairdryers
To many people, hair dryers are just hair dryers. Although regardless of their brands these electro-mechanical devices have a lot of internal mechanisms in common, a few brands still stand out in terms of uniqueness and integrity of their products. Andis is one of those brands that have been in the business for decades and has sustained in this industry because of their quality. Following are the features of Andis dryers that highlight them among many other contemporary brands.
Andis is good with 1600 watts to 1875 watts dryers
Almost all the dryers Andis has manufactured so far are within the wattage range of 1600 watts to 1875 watts. This is good news for those who fear their hair getting damaged by powerful dryers. People with damaged hair can also switch to dryers that have a lower wattage for preventing further damage.
Versatile in terms of the category of dryers (Handheld, home, professional, hotel, travel and bonnet hair dryers)
Andis has almost of types of dryers that people can possibly think of. Starting from basic home dryers and Travel dryers to professional dryers and wall mounted hotel dryers. They also have a few soft bonnets and hard bonnet dryers. Andis takes hair drying business seriously!
They specialize in Ceramic, Tourmaline, and Ionic technology
Andis has both nonionic basic dryers and ionic dryers. In terms of material preferences, they usually use ceramic. Keeping the skeptics in mind who do not consider materials or technologies to bring much of a difference to hair quality, they did manufacture dryers that are just basic.
However, with the rising demands of Tourmaline, Andis also has upgraded some of their previous ceramic dryers into Tourmaline-Ceramic dryers. These technologies are taking over the market because of their benefits on hair to retain the desired moisture level and enhance the quality and integrity of the cuticles of hair.
While Ceramic is popular for even and gentle infrared heating, Tourmaline is a few steps ahead as a heat protectant and natural conditioner which can be incorporated in hairdryers. Ionic technology on the other hand tag-teamed with these materials used to create the heating elements works efficiently to fight frizz and static.
Their wall-mounted dryers are the best in the market
Andis is one of the leading brands that manufacture quality wall mounted dryers. They are one of the very few brands that have incorporated Tourmaline in wall mounted dryers.
These dryers are not only stylish looking, but they are also convenient for temporary use in many ways. For use in the low lighted bathrooms such as in cruise ships, these dryers have LED nightlight to help you get your job done. Connected with wires to their receivers on the wall, there is no chance for your dryer to break by slipping from your hands.
Built-in Lifeline shock protection system
Almost all of the Andis dryers have a built-in lifeline shock protection system to save you from all kinds of electrical hazards. During the mid-20th Century, people often faced electrical hazards from using hair dryers. Death caused by electrocution that initiated from hair dryers was also an occurrence. But it has come down to fewer than four people a year and that is because U.S Consumer Products Safety Commission has mandated that all dryers must have a ground fault circuit interrupter since 1991. It is great to see Andis taking their job seriously and using a clever strategy to make people aware of their safety measures.
They manufacture their own diffusers
Although Andis dryers are not particularly great for curly hair types because of low wattage, their tourmaline dryers can be used on thicker and curlier varieties of hair. But A hair dryer without a diffuser is almost of no use if there isn’t a diffuser.
On top of that, diffusers from other manufacturers often do not fit the dryer mouths. Good news is, Andis does manufacture their own diffusers which will be perfectly compatible with their dryers.
Economic and affordable pricing of good quality dryers
Andis dryers are very reasonably priced. Almost all of Andis dryers can be purchased within the budget of $50 only. Compared to brands that have priced their products similarly, quality of Andis dryers is great in terms of internal components, motor selection etc. Also, for a brand which has sustained well in the industry for more than 90 years and focused solely on hairdressing and hair styling, it is obvious that their products are anything but poor in terms of quality. All of these within a reasonable price-range is what anyone would love to have.
Standard Motor quality
There are Andis dryers with both AC motors and DC motors. Hair experts recommend AC motor dryers because of longevity and powerful airflow. DC motors, however, might not be as longer laster as AC motors unless the brands give a warranty. However, dryers that have DC motor do a pleasant job as regular home dryers or travel dryers.
Andis dryers with DC motor are quieter than many dryers. In fact, their hotel dryers are popular because they wouldn’t wake people up with annoying sound.
This is a great addition to hair drying because even the greatest of hair dryers are not as quiet. If ambiance and the noise-less environment is something you prioritize more than other factors, Andis dryers, especially the wall mounted dryers can do a great job.
A few negative aspects
Every brand has their teeny tiny drawbacks and so does Andis when it comes to hair dryers. Andis was initially established as a manufacturing company for clippers. Later, they kept adding other accessories and upgraded previous versions of their tools. Although it is hard to find brands that stand near to Andis clippers and other hairdressing tools, Andis has some tough competitions in the hair drying sector. Following are the few negative aspects od Andis dryers we found comparing with other brands.
They do not have any titanium dryer
Andis does have Ceramic, Tourmaline, and Ionic dryers. But they did not consider manufacturing Titanium dryers. Titanium is a quick heating element that can cut down the drying time a lot more than Ceramic. While ceramic is great for fine hair types, ceramic dryers take longer to dry thick and curly hair types unless they are 2000 watts and above.
But it still isn’t a major drawback because they do have Tourmaline dryers that are great for all hair types including really thick and coarse hair.
They do not have 2000 watt dryers
Andis does not have dryers above 1875 watts. Which means, unless their dryers have Tourmaline, we do not recommend these dryers for thick and curly hair types.
The exterior is made from cheap plastic
Almost all hair drying companies use plastic especially to make their exterior. Andis is no exception. The reason why Andis dryers are lightweight is that they are made of very fragile plastic and they can break with accidental falls. They have tried to cover this flaw up with ergonomically contoured handles to help you get a better grip.
For their hotel dryers, there is attached wires to save dryers from accidental falls. The cheap plastic is also the reason why their dryers are not as expensive.
Not the most long-lasting dryers
Unless you have purchased an Andis dryer with and Ac motor or with warranty, do not expect your dryer to last more than 2 to 3 years. Because of the plastic exterior, it’s easily breakable and fragile. Therefore it is better when used with care.
Their Bonnet Dryers are not up to the mark
Although Andis did not leave any stones unturned in terms of variety in their hairdryers, performance-wise their bonnet dryers are not as good as the contemporary brand who manufacture Bonnet dryers.
Top 4 Andis Hair Dryers
Among the many Andis hair dryers available, we have tried to shortlist the best among them based on their overall quality and popularity. We have also chosen dryers according to the category for your convenience.
Following are the top most Andis hairdryers that we recommend.
1. Andis 1600-Watt Wall Mounted Hangup Hair Dryer (33495) – Best Wall Mounted Hairdryer
This Andis dryer is a masterpiece. This same dryer has different renditions that you can identify using model numbers. We recommend the model no. 33495 because of its all-inclusive features. This dryer just like the other model numbers have 1600 watts and 2 heat and air settings. What sets it apart from other dryers is its LED Light and Auto shut off. All of the renditions of this dryer are reasonably quiet and lightweight. This dryer is 1.8 pounds in weight only.
Second, to model 33495, we prefer model 30135 which also has all the features identical to our first preference. The only difference is that it does not have any night light/ LED light which is not considered important for many users. Also, it weighs 1.6 pounds, a little less than our 1st preference.
For better understanding, we have compared three models of this wall mounted Andis dryer. See the following table to spot the subtle differences and why we chose one over the other.
Comparison Table (33495 vs 30135 vs 30975)
|Features||Andis 33495||Andis 30135||Andis 30975|
|Settings||2 Heat/Air Settings||2 Heat/Air Settings||2 Heat/Air Settings|
|Weight||1.8 pounds||1.6 pounds||2.6 pounds|
|Auto Shut off feature||Yes||Yes||No|
|Life Line Shock Protection||Yes||Yes||Yes|
As you can see, these dryers are almost the same but we still chose 33495 as our 1st preference because of its all-inclusive features. Our second preference is Andis 30135 because of its identical features to our top wall mounted dryer other than the night light. Which means, this model is not for cruise ships of darker places. Andis 30975, on the other hand, is not our choice because of heavier weight and not having an auto shut off feature. Auto shut off feature is important for wall mounted dryers for its power-saving benefits. If you accidentally forget to switch of this dryer, it will keep running and cost you electric bills.
Following are the other pros and cons of this dryer.
- The electronic lights are very long lasting will not require replacements for years.
- No external plug needed because the wire is directly connected to the power supply.
- This dryer is ADA Compliant and convenient for people with disabilities.
- This dryer is reasonably quiet and allows you to dry your hair noise free.
- This dryer has dual voltage power system allowing you to purchase this as a hotel/cruise ship business owner in any part of this world.
- In comparison with professional or home dryers, this dryer might take a little more time to dry your hair because of wattage. But compared to its other benefits, that is not a factor.
2. Andis 1875-Watt Fold-N-Go Ionic Hair Dryer (80020) – Best Travel Hair Dryer
If wall mounted dryers do not do justice to your hair during your stay at the hotel, carrying a travel hair dryers seems to be a better option. Andis 1875 Watt Fold- N- Go is our 1st preference for an Andis Travel Hairdryer.
The specialty of this dryer is that it can be used as a home hair dryer as well as a travel dryer because of its standard 1875 watts. It also is infused with Nano-Ceramic, Tourmaline and Ionic Technology to bring out the best quality of your hair. It also comes with a foldable handle and retractable cord allowing easy storage and luggage packing solutions.
However, this dryer is not fit for international travels because of not having dual voltage facilities. But that can be compensated with a separate dual voltage converter and a travel adapter.
If you are into international travels, you can try Andis 1600-Watt MicroTurbo Dual Voltage Hair Dryer, White (33805). Andis 1600-Watt MicroTurbo dryer is perfect for travelers who intend to tour outside of the U.S because of its dual voltage power system. This dryer is also reasonably quiet allowing noise-free hair drying experience. You wouldn’t want to wake others up after taking that shower at night after hectic travel schedules.
We have compared our 1st and 2nd preferences for Andis Travel dryers to find out the differences.
|Features||Andis Fold-N-Go||Andis Micro Turbo|
|Wattage||1875 watts||1600 watts|
- Also has built-in shock protection to save you from any kind of electrocution.
- Tourmaline restores moisture balance and emits far infrared gentle heat combined with the benefits of Ceramic.
- Ionic technology helps you fight with frizz even in the midst of busy travel schedules.
- Tourmaline cuts down drying time by 40%.
- Retractable cord saves more space and prevents annoyance caused by tangled cords.
- Dual voltage converter needs to be bought separately for international travels.
- No diffuser attachments.
Please note that, whether a dryer is good for traveling will depend on its power system. Dual voltage option is considered essential for Travel dryers according to experts. Hence, we chose Andis 1600- Watt MicroTurbo Dual Voltage hair dryer as our second option.
For our second Preference, Andis MicroTurbo, we recommend HaoZi Universal Travel Adapter for convenient world-wide plug-in options.
3. Andis 1875-Watt Tourmaline Ceramic Ionic Hair Dryer (80480) – Best Professional Dryer
This dryer is the upgraded version of the model 82005 which had only Ceramic used as a heating element. Later Andis decided to add Tourmaline to this dryer to make it suitable for all types of hair and here it is. Apart from the great benefits of having Tourmaline and Ceramic combined in this dryer, This dryer has 3 heat and 2-speed settings for maximum control over temperature and airflow. Its Tourmaline-Ceramic-Ionic technology cuts down drying time by over 40% and also smoothens out damaged cuticles to give you naturally shiny and frizz-free hair.
Second to 80480, is just the previous version of this same dryer Andis Professional 1875 Watt Ceramic Ionic Hair Dryer – Black Chrome (82005). This dryer is specifically great because of its AC motor and 10 ft. long power cord. But it has only 2 heat and 2-speed settings. Also, it is not suitable for thick hair types and these are the reasons why this dryer is our second preference for a professional dryer.
Following is the comparison between our preferred dryers and another popular Andis dryer.
|Features||Andis 1875-Watt Tourmaline Ceramic Ionic Hair Dryer, Black (80480)||Andis Professional 1875 Watt Ceramic Ionic Hair Dryer - Black Chrome (82005).||Andis Pro Dry Tourmaline-Ceramic Ionic Dryer, Black (82360)|
|Cord Length||6 ft.||10 ft.||9 ft.|
|Suitable for||All types of Hair||Fine Hair||All types of Hair|
The reason why we chose 80480, is because of it materials used. Also, Andis Pro Dry seems like a great dryer. But it is relatively new as a dryer to know if it lives up to its full potential. Hence we did not include this dryer on our preferred list of professional dryers by Andis.
Following are the other Pros and Cons of Andis 1875-Watt Tourmaline Ceramic Ionic Hair Dryer, Black (80480)
- Tourmaline and Ceramic will ensure healthy hair dryer by emitting even heat and retaining moisture balance.

This Andis dryer is an all in one solution to home hair drying. This is infused with Tourmaline-Ceramic and Ionic technology combined to give you maximum health benefits on your hair. Tourmaline and Ceramic make it suitable for all hair types. Also, has the standard wattage to blow the perfect airflow.
This dryer is only 1.3 pounds which makes it perfectly lightweight. It comes with 3 comb attachments which are boar bristles, fine teeth, and wide teeth. The other pros and cons are below.

Both the dryers we have chosen and the dryers we have compared have their potentials and honestly, preference can be subjective from person to person based on their needs.
